- <p> DIED. TATIANA TROYANOS, 54, mezzo-soprano; of cancer; in New
- York. Admired for her dark, passionate and versatile voice,
- Troyanos, a fast study of difficult parts, splendidly performed
- a vast repertoire on the world's most important operatic stages.
- A secretary who dropped out of Juilliard to study music privately,
- she launched her career with the New York City Opera in 1963,
- spent a decade with the Hamburg State Opera, and made her debut
- with the Metropolitan Opera in 1976 as Octavian in Strauss's
- Der Rosenkavalier. Her roles included Carmen, Kundry in Wagner's
- Parsifal, Eboli in Verdi's Don Carlos, Santuzza in Mascagni's
- Cavalleria Rusticana and Cherubino in Mozart's The Marriage
- of Figaro. Only last year at the Met she premiered the role
- of Queen Isabella in Philip Glass's new work, Voyage.
